Since 2020, an island in the river Waal in the town of Nijmegen (Netherlands) has been home to a giant replica of a Roman mask. It is a work of art in its own right, and very popular with the public.
The original silver and gold helmet and mask, discovered in 1915 in the river Waal and dating from the 1st century AD, probably belonged to a Roman horseman, and is now on display in the Het Valkhof museum.
Artist Andreas Hetfeld decided to bring this mask back to life, creating a giant outdoor work (nearly 6 metres high) as a modern interpretation of this ancient Roman artefact, and his creation has quickly become a powerful symbol for the city.
MCtechnics supplied the composite materials used to make this mask of impressive proportions, enabling the artist to create a solid, durable work, through whose eyes curious visitors can view the surrounding landscape.
A fine example of how our technical expertise can contribute to cultural projects that can be enjoyed by thousands of visitors.
